Round Table – Creating Spaces of Inclusion and Belonging with Classroom Stories – Megan Hayes and Cécile Lainé

This round table discussion will be based upon the premise “that all students are capable of learning, that many students of color face considerable and purposeful inequity, and that diversity is a beautiful opportunity for any teacher.” (Mathew Kay, Not Light, but Fire) In addition to racial and ethnic diversity and representation, we will discuss the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility, fluid language, and breaking down harmful and limiting stereotypes and generalizations in our classrooms. We will examine the stories we use and ask ourselves some hard questions on how we can do better. We hope to provoke deeper thought on creating diverse spaces of belonging for all students in the world language classroom.
